🌋 Will the volcanic activity affect my travel?
You may have heard about the ongoing eruptions of the Fagradalsfjall volcano near Grindavík. This volcanic activity has been recurring since 2021, with eruptions occurring every few months and lasting from a week to several weeks. The volcano is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, approximately 10 kilometers from Keflavík International Airport and about 30 kilometers from Reykjavík.
While the flowing lava and tectonic activity have caused significant damage in the town of Grindavík and posed threats to the Blue Lagoon and the nearby power plant, the risk to travel between Reykjavík and the airport remains low. The airport has remained operational, as the volcano produces minimal ash, and the road connecting Reykjavík to the airport has not been affected. Reykjavik is not in any danger from this eruption.
Even if a new eruption of this volcano occurs before OSW, we do not expect any changes to this situation. If conditions are safe and favorable, we may organize a group excursion to view an eruption, should one be active during OSW.
